PWS&D Accepting Donations for Hungary “Red Mud” Disaster
On Monday, October 4, a flood of toxic red sludge inundated several communities around Ajka, Hungary, after a reservoir of an alumina plant burst, injuring 120 people and claiming seven lives. Hundreds of people have lost their homes and belongings, and the sludge’s high concentration of heavy metals have damaged the surrounding land and waterways, including the Danube River. Emergency crews and environmental officials are working hard to contain and neutralize the impact of the toxic waste, a by-product of aluminum refining.
PWS&D Accepting Donations
PWS&D is accepting donations to support the response of Hungarian Reformed Church Aid, the development arm of the Hungarian Reformed Church, a long-standing partner of PWS&D. Assessments of the damage and needs of affected people is underway

Ars Longa North America (ALNA) exists to promote the formation of historical Christian values among young people in East Central Europe to further the development of strong Christian communities. It works primarily with the Ars Longa Foundation in its efforts to offer consultation, fundraising, and encouragement to youth programs associated with the Reformed church in Hungary, the Ukraine, and Croatia. ALNA has chosen to focus its efforts on two facets of Ars Longa’s work: the Reformed high schools in Transcarpathia, Ukraine, and the Ars Longa community development effort in Baranya County, Hungary.-

Airplanes, Soda Cans, and Red Sludge – Laslo Medyesy
On Hungary’s “Red Sludge” disaster:
Missionary to the Reformed Church in Hungary Rev. Laslo Medyesy discusses the “Red Sludge” disaster that befell the nation. The sludge is a waste product of bauxite processing.
This muddy, highly toxic, acid substance is placed indefinitely in huge artificial ponds which require constant maintenance. Otherwise the aging retaining dams could break down, causing destruction and death to man and nature alike. Ecologists for decades have warned about the potential danger of such deadly lakes but the insatiable need for more aluminum has overruled any other consideration.
Weeks of rain finally resulted in the rupture of one such retaining wall, destroying “five pristine villages” accordig to Medyesy.

November 12, 2010 – 51st Hungarian Protestant Ball – Magyar Protestans Bal – To Fund The Scholarship Fund
Dear Friends:
The Fifty-first Hungarian Protestant 8all will be held on Friday evening, November 12, 2010, at The Forge, Woodbridge, New Jersey (Route 9 North, off exit 11 of the New Jersey Turnpike), with the cocktail hour beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be followed by the Presentation of the Debutantes, dinner, and the dance.
We are again planning the traditional Opening Ceremony with the Presentation of Debutantes. For this reason, we strongly urge you to recruit the younger members of your congregations and organizations and their friends to participate in this event as debutantes and escorts.
As usual, debutantes and their escorts are the guests of the Ball Committee.
Debutantes and their escorts may meet on one occasion prior to the date of the Ball in order to review the essentials of the opening ceremony.
We ask the pastors and members of the congregations and organizations to set aside November 1fh for the 51st Ball. Admission for the dinner and dance is sixty-five dollars ($65); dance tickets only are twenty dollars ($20); and student tickets (without dinner) are five dollars ($5).
We also invite you to be a Patron of the 51st Hungarian Protestant Ball. A contribution of at least ninety dollars ($90) is requested. A complimentary dinner-dance ticket will be provided to those Patrons who donate one hundred ten dollars ($110) or more. Please inform us of your acceptance by October 31 so that we may include your name in this year’s Patron listing. Any contributions received after November 1 will be acknowledged in next year’s listing. A reservation card and envelope are enclosed for your convenience for ticket and table reservations (10 people per table).
According to the traditions of the Hungarian Protestant Ball, the proceeds from the 8all will be used to provide scholarships to worthy college students. Your support is extremely important and needed; the better the attendance, the larger the Scholarship Fund will be. At last year’s Ball, we awarded six (6) scholarships to deserving college and graduate students of Hungarian background from the funds we received from our supporting Patrons and others.
Please forward the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of those who wish to participate in this year’s Debutante Presentation to anyone of the Committee members, or call Miss Priscilla Hunyady (732-306-6933) or the Rev. Stefan Torok (732-917-4566) or E-mail: hungarianprotestantball@hotmail.com by October 31 for additional information.
Let us all work together to make this 51st Hungarian Protestant Ball a successful event.
Respectfully yours,
The Officers and Trustees
of the Hungarian Protestant Ball
