Bethlen Home Sundays
During the nearly 90 years of its existence, representatives of Bethlen Communities have looked forward to visiting the many congregations, which support the residents and ministries of Bethlen with their prayers and donations. In earlier years, when the Orphanage was the important part of Bethlen’s focus, the children would go out and visit, performing dances, reciting poetry, singing songs, all of which told the wonderful story of Bethlen Home and the good care it provided.
Today, of course, our focus is on care for the retired and the elderly, a ministry just as crucial for these folks as was the ministry to the young people decades ago. Additionally, Bethlen Communities is redeveloping the old nursing home building into the Heritage Center, which, in addition to housing programs for the elderly, will become a conference center for our Hungarian Reformed congregations and possibly the location for their historical documents and archival materials. The Heritage Center will also be the site of Hungarian cultural programs and activities, to which the larger Ligonier Valley community will be invited.
At the heart of Bethlen Communities’ activities in the present and its outlook to the future is our reliance upon the guiding and sustaining presence of Jesus Christ. Without the Lord’s inspiration and strength, we could not be providing the quality of care and the high level of successful programing the residents and clients of Bethlen Communities have come to know. And to help the staff and management of Bethlen Communities maintain this faith-based standard, we turn, once again, to the Hungarian Reformed and Roman Catholic congregations nationwide, who have historically lifted the cause of Bethlen in prayer and in financial support.
Bethlen Communities would like to schedule as many “Bethlen Communities Sundays” in our congregations as possible in the new year. We would like to bring the good news of Ligonier to all of our supporters, and if Sunday is not the best day, we would be able to come any day of the week.
In 2009, I will be calling upon members of the Board, as well as staff and others who have first hand knowledge of Bethlen Communities, to assist me in visiting our congregations. Bethlen will assemble a portable presentation (eg. power point or video), which can be taken with each team of presenters. Bethlen’s goal is to visit every Hungarian Reformed, Roman Catholic and other congregation, which desires a visit in 2009.
In order to begin scheduling the visits, I would ask pastors and lay leaders to look at their 2009 calendars and decide upon 2 or 3 dates that would be best for your congregation. Please email or call these dates in to me as soon as possible. We will be there to honor your request and to thank you for your support, and to share the good news of Bethlen Communities! Please feel free to distribute this message to others, who may not be on the email heading.
May the Lord continue to guide and bless each of our congregations!
Sincerely,
Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, Exec. Dir.

New England Reformed Fellowship – Sept 9th Immanuel Chapel Upton MA
Rev. David Green of New England Reformed Fellowship invites ministers and presbyters of the Hungarian Reformed Churches who may be near to the the September 9th meeting of the New England Reformed Fellowship:
Dear Brethren:
Next Tuesday we inaugurate a fresh season of opportunities for fellowship and, I trust, encouragement in Christ at our New England Reformed Fellowship monthly meetings. Here’s this month’s opportunity:
SEPTEMBER MEETING DATE: TUESDAY, the 9th
An introductory note from our speaker Jean-Claude Souillot about his life, work and subject:
Born in a family and a Catholic country, I was always affected by religion, but I did not know God personally. During my adolescence, I thought of becoming a priest, but the attraction of Eastern and mystical religions led me on a different path. At that point I met evangelical Christians. I was touched by the love that they had one for another and had confidence enough in them to open my heart to them and to ask the questions that gnawed at me. Their answers taught me that the Bible was what would answer my questions. As I read the Bible I understood that I had to submit to Christ, I rejected the whole thing and had several difficult years. When I got to England, the Lord had me bend the knee and granted me a new life which is in his Son. I spent ten years in Great Britain, and after getting married and having two children, I returned to my country [France] to search how I could serve the Lord there. Thus, almost twenty years ago, I committed myself to spread the Gospel of grace by all legitimate means in the French speaking world.
Europresse is first and foremost a publishing house, but its other face, Échos de la vérité (Echoes of truth) is more of a missionary effort to spread the knowledge of Christ in this vast almost empty field. In this way I was led to translate and to publish a certain number of books. I have also had the privilege of going to Africa a few times each year to preach and to help train preachers. Where we live, we have worked for several years at planting a church, facing all the difficulties that such a missionary effort faces in France. This is the way that we are trying to reach our local area with the message of salvation in Christ.
I would like to present the work in which we are engaged in the French speaking world, both in Europe and in Africa. This will allow me to speak of publishing efforts, of the newspaper, of radio programs, of training courses for preachers. This will make it possible for me to sketch a more general picture of the missionary situation in French speaking areas of the world and to share some experiences that I have had in Africa or in the West Indies. This all depends on how much time I have. I can also prepare a slide show if it would be helpful.
SPECIAL OFFER FOR ATTENDEES AT NEXT TUESDAY’S MEETING
Our own Doug Vickers has written a new book: When God Converts a Sinner, which takes its title from a phrase in the Westminster/Savoy/Baptist confessions. He explains the title in the preface and more fully in chapter 5. Some of you will remember the title as coming from a paper Doug presented at NERF recently. Doug writes: Over the last eight years I have enjoyed the hospitality of NERF on nine occasions and I would now like to do a little to repay that hospitality. In particular, I would like to bring twenty-five copies of the book to NERF next month and donate them to the members present. And if more than twenty-five come, Doug will mail a copy to them.
So for some of you receiving this announcement whom we may have never seen and for others who have too long not been with us, please receive this additional incentive to join us next Tuesday.
We begin anytime after 8:30AM for a muffin and coffee and end before noon.
Location & Directions: Immanuel Chapel in Upton, MA, which is a white church building located on the right-hand side of west Main Street (Hopkinton Road) about 3 miles from I-495, going toward Upton. (Hopkinton Road is the first exit off I-495 south of Interstate 90, alias the Massachusetts Turnpike.
PAPERS NEEDED
We will need papers for this season. I have been in touch with several of you but there are still a number of open months. Please take this opportunity to present an extended book review or reviews, biographical study, theological matter of interest and importance to you or question that might engage us for a morning’s profitable discussion.
BOOK REVIEWS – I encourage you to prepare and present a brief book review for our mutual edification. If you are willing to do this, please let Paul Wanamaker know at pnwanamaker@comcast.net. Paul will be taking over from Bob Davis, who, I think most of you know, has moved to Staunton, VA to pastor there.
