February 11, 1676 Gally Slaves Free

It was 333 years ago that the Magyar Galley Slaves were freed from their oars, on February 11, 1676. Sold into slavery by the Counter-reformation courts and Habsburg tyranny, only 41 Hungarian Reformed pastors survived the ordeal of rowing the merchant ships of the Neapolitans, before being ransomed by the Dutch. Lest we forget, let us give thanks to God for His presence in their forsakeness, for their faith and courage, and for the outpouring of mercy and charity of their liberators.

Rev. Albert W. Kovacs
